Freehand laser cutter creates instant flat-pack design

by:Transon     2020-09-03
Colin Ballas, you can call it the rebirth of a 2D printer.
Flat packaging for new equipment-
As with the design using laser indicators and laser cutting machines, this is the latest addition to the new field of \"interactive manufacturing\" and is expected to further help ordinary consumers become product designers.
Now, computer design software packages and 3D printers make it possible for anyone to dream and make new gadgets.
But the cost of technology is not the only obstacle.
Patrick bowdes of the Potsdam Hasso Plattner Institute in Germany said, be a designer.
\"I have one dollar;
40,000 3D printer and a & dollar;
\"The 40,000 laser cutting machine-both devices are pretty cool,\" Baudisch said . \".
\"Surprisingly, the 3D printer runs once a month-the laser cutter runs several times a day.
\"The problem is the engineer\'s need for speed,\" he said.
\"It takes a few hours for a 3D printer.
With the laser cutter I can get an object in a few seconds-it\'s very fast.
Baudisch worked with his colleagues Stefanie Mueller and Pedro Lopes to turn his laser cutting machine into a desktop device, anyone can quickly and accurately cut out the complex from plywood using only one box of color laser indicators.
The webcam installed above the table tracks the design that the user draws onto the plywood using a laser pointer.
This information is passed on to the computer, which organizes the hand drawing and instructs the laser cutter to burn the design into wood.
The computer recognizes from the sensors inside each laser indicator that each laser indicator has an accurate function, which allows the user to add additional complexity as the design progresses.
For example, a laser dot will etching a circle on the plywood.
Clicking the circle with a second laser indicator will indicate that the laser cutter adds teeth to the outer edge of the circle, thus creating the gear.
Other laser indicators will simply score instead of cutting wood to make folding easier, or add finger joints along some edges so that the graphic design can be pushed together after folding.
\"When my 3D printer generated the first object, I had already iterated a lot [
Laser cutting machine
Baudisch said: \"I have developed a completely different way to solve this problem-it has a huge impact on the creative process, who will present the device at a user interface software and technology conference in Boston on October.
The technology now seems to be a niche product, but Mark Gross of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, says devices like it are a \"emerging opportunity \".
\"My favorite analogy is the desktop printing revolution,\" he said . \"
With the decline in hardware prices and the widespread use of software, everyone can design and print their own documents, Gross said.
\"In a world of rapid manufacturing, we may see similar sequence of events.
